 In Northern Song Dynasty, the folding fan was introduced into China from Korea. And Rongchang folding fan originated in the beginning of Qing Dynasty, with a 450-year history. It is delicate and elegant enjoying a good reputation since the ancient times, which is one of the three famous fan-manufacturing locations (the other two are Suzhou and Hangzhou) in China.
In the very beginning, The folding fan was just a common daily commodity. Rongchang people only shaped the local yellow bamboo to the fan structure and glued with black paper to make the earliest folding fan. They sold this simply-made fans in the market. But today, it has developed into a sort of craftwork with elaborate craftmanship.The present Ronchang folding fan has 11 types and 345 styles. Only one simple small folding fan has 16 types of workers, and 146 procedures. Ronchang folding fan has already even become one unique charming folk art with its delicate and artistic producing.
Rongchang folding fan production is a fine and skillful one. Just one simple piece of the folding fan can contain many images and colors. Among them, the Hanging Fan and Grass-cloth Fan are popular collectibles by many private collectors.
